Provenance: Music originally composed by Nicolas Dezède (ca 1740-1790), a French composer, for his opera-comique "Julie" (1772) act 2 scene 1, with libretto by Jacques Marie Boutet Monvel. "Julie" was translated and performed in the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 1783. Shortly thereafter, "Lison dormait" or "I krattet Lise hvile tager" in Danish, was published as a broadsheet ballad. See also Mozart's '9 Variations in C on "Lison dormait"' 1778, nr 264 in the Köchel-Verzeichnis.
The dance was first documented by Carla Schibler in 1932 who had learned it from some elderly residents of Langeland. Later, in 1942, H.H. Hansen published the version commonly danced now, which he had learned from Rasmus Jensen, an apprentice bricklayer, 'modern' dance teacher and folk dance teacher, originally from Langeland, where they still danced the old dances.
