Danish text:
Højt på en gren en krage
Så kom en hæslig jæger,
Han skød den stakkels krage,
Nu er den stakkels krage,
Og da et år var gået,
Da var den krage atter,
Så blev de alle glade
|
English translation:
High on a branch a crow
Along a gruesome hunter
He shot the poor crow
Now the poor crow is
And after a year was gone
Then the crow was resurr..
And all the people were glad
|
English scanning version:
High in a tree a cuckoo
Along a ruthless hunter
He shot the singing cuckoo
And now the singing cuckoo was
But after one whole year had gone
Again the cuckoo in the tree
And all the people loved it so
|
Note: In the original German this was a political protest song, the singing cuckoo was a metaphor for freedom, and the hunter a metaphor for repression. |
