Formation: two parallel rows of two (or more) couples in each, couples 1 and 5 with backs to the front, and all other couples facing front.

1-4 | (a) | With a clap on (1:1) W1 and W2 change places, passing on the R, turning over R shoulder at opposite place. Simultaneously, M1 and M2 also change places, but passing on the L, and turning over L shoulder at opposite place, M crossing between the women. M take first step straight forward, and then pass between the two W. 4 chassé steps.
Meanwhile, couples 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8, do the same. |
5-8 | Repeat (a) to return to place. | |
9-12 | (b) | All couples take 2-hand hold with partner (M have backs to front), and the couples in each row change places with each other, passing CW but with no turns. Ie couple 1 changes place with couple 5, couple 2 with couple 6, etc. 8 small slip-steps. |
13-16 | Couples repeat (b), again passing CW around opposite couple, to return to place. | |
17-24 | (c) | Couples 2 with 6, and 3 with 7 (ie the middle couples) take R-hand star between the rows, and dance 8 chassé steps turning CW between the rows (2 in, 4 around, 2 to return to place).

25-26 | (d) | Couples 1 and 2 (and couples 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8) advance 4 small walking steps, finishing with a brief courtesy to opposite. |
27-28 | Couples 1 and 2 (and couples 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8) retire 4 small walking steps to place. | |
27-28 | All couples again advance. Couples 2, 4, 6 and 8 make arches and couples 1, 3, 5, and 7 pass under the arches. Couples 1, 4, 5, and 8 advance 4 walking steps and stop, while couples 2, 3, 6, and 7 dance 4 walking steps and turn one-half turn CCW on the spot, 4 walking steps. | |
When the dance begins again, couples 1, 4, 5 and 8 dance part (a).
All couples dance parts (b) and (c), but only the centre couples dance part (d), finishing with 4 walking steps but no turn. NB: It is always the couples dancing towards the front that make the arch. | ||
