Provenance: a variant of the krakowiak or cracovienne, a Polish folk dance from the Krakow area. Became a popular ballroom dance in Vienna and Paris, contemporaneously with polonaise and mazurka. The first [currently known] printed version of the sheet music was published in 1816. A discussion of the Krakowiak appears in Czerniawskiego (1847, pp. 43-51). Also occurs in Estonia as Krakovjakk.
