Formation: 4, 6 or 8 in a square set. Head couples have backs to music or face music. Couples are numbered CW around set beginning with head couple with back to music.

Bars Part Dance progression:
1-8 1 (a) Piiri (circle): All couples form closed circle, and dance 16 walking steps CW, swinging arms in and out.
1-8   Repeat CCW. 16 walking steps.
9-16   (b) Polkka: Take polkka hold (waltz hold, but with ML/WR joined hands on Man's L hip) and dance 8 polkka steps turning CW and moving in the LOD, half way round the set.
9-16   Dance 8 polkka steps turning CCW and moving in the LOD, to return to place.
1-8 2 (a) Pikkupiirit (small circles): Head M (ie M1 and M3) and side W (W2 and W4) form small circle, M holding W waists, and W with hands on M shoulders. Dance 16 slip-steps moving CW, 2 full circuits and return to place. [Tanhuvakka has front basket hold.]
1-8   M2, M4, W1 and W3 repeat (2 a), but moving CCW, to return to place.
|:9-16:|   (b) Polkka: Repeat (1 b).
1-8 3 (a) Pääparien piiri (heads circle): Head couples (couples 1 and 3) form closed circle, hands at shoulder height. Dance 8 slip-steps moving CW, and 8 slip-steps moving CCW, and return to place.
1-4   Sivuparien kihuminen (sides cross over): Side couples, holding inside hands, dance 8 walking steps to opposite place, passing on the R, W slightly in front of partner, and swinging inside hands.
5-8   Side couples repeat to return to place. 8 walking steps.
|:9-16:|   (b) Polkka: Repeat (1 b).
[Vanhapelto taught this as a repeat of (3 (a)) with side couples dancing as head couples above, and head couples dancing as side couples above.]
1-8 4 (a) Hanhenmarssi (chase): All turn to L, M with arms folded on chest, W with hands on partner's shoulders. Dance 16 walking steps moving CW in the set.
1-8   All turn 1/2 turn to L, W with fists on hips, M with hands on partner's shoulders. Dance 16 walking steps moving CCW in the set to return to place.

|:1-8:| 5 (a) Piirilaukka (slip-step circle): All form closed circle, hands at shoulder level. Dance 16 slip-steps, moving CW. Repeat, moving CCW.
