Provenance: the dance was taught by Anna Jäppinen, who had learned it in the rural area around Vyborg circa 1850. The dance has been shortened by omitting the repeated 'advance & retire' at the end of each part/seuqnce and by combining the men's chain (2 (a)) into one sequence, although originally each M performed it individually in turn. Published by Anni Collan in 1908 (as 'Vanha sappu'). Taught by Turun Kansantanssin Ystävät in Vancouver, April 1984.
