Provenance:
Many of these tunes are variants of Carl Michael Bellman's
'Fredmans epistel no. 42 - Ren Calad jag spår och tror'
(lyrics) dated to between 1773-1780, and also
used for 'Fredmans epistel no. 49 - Mamsell Ulla' .
Known all over Denmark, under a variety of names and danced to a variety of tunes.
The dance and variants of the tune have been known in most of northern Europe, including Finland
(Kaakkuri/Tantoli &
Sju steg/Sju/Ett, två, tre, fyra, fem, sex, sju), Norway
(Rugen &
Sjutrøaren frå Senja), and Sweden
(Räknaren - same dance, different music).
Also known as
Seven step in the former Danish colonies of the West Indies. In North America, now
most commonly known as the childrens' counting song 'Seven steps'.
