Formation: any number of couples in open circle, sideways front-crossed hold or 2-hand hold with partner, facing LOD.

1-2 1 (a) Kantavarvas (heel-toe): Beginning with outside (ML/WR) foot, couples dance 1 change-step forward in LOD (1), followed by a heel-toe step with inside (MR/WL) foot (2) while hopping on outside foot.
3-4   Without dropping hold, [couples turn to face RLOD], and repeat (1 (a)) with opposite footwork, moving in RLOD.
5-8   (b) Polka: Take waltz hold with partner, and dance polka, turning CW and moving in LOD.
9-10 2 (a) Nousu varpaille (lift): Beginning with outside (ML/WR) foot, couples dance 1 change-step forward in LOD (9), followed by a step forward [onto inside (MR/WL) foot] lifting onto toes (10:1) and falling back onto whole foot (10:2).
11-12   Without dropping hold, [couples turn to face RLOD], and repeat (2 (a)) with opposite footwork, moving in RLOD.
13-16   (b) Polka: Take waltz hold with partner, and dance polka, turning CW and moving in LOD.
1-2 3 (a) Jalan heilautukset (step-swing): Beginning with outside (ML/WR) foot, and holding inside (MR/WL) hands, couples dance 2 walking steps forward in LOD (1), followed by a step forward [onto outside (ML/WR) foot] while swinging inside foot straight forward (2).
3-4   [Couples turn to face RLOD], take 'new' inside (ML/WR) hand, repeat (3 (a)) with opposite footwork, moving in RLOD.
5-8   (b) Polka: Take waltz hold with partner, and dance polka, turning CW and moving in LOD.
[This sequence is not present in the Komulainen source.]
9-10 4 (a) Kiertää & tervehdys (turn & courtesy): Beginning with outside (ML/WR) foot, couples dance 2 walking steps turning one full turn away from partner [M turning CCW, W turning CW] (9), followed by a side-step with outside (ML/WR) foot to ML/WR [in LOD] while doing a brief curtsey/bow to partner (10)
11-12   Repeat with opposite footwork [M turning CW, W turning CCW].
13-16   (b) Polka: Take waltz hold with partner, and dance polka, turning CW and moving in LOD.
Repeat from (1 (a)) as desired.
1-16   The dance finishes with dancing part 1 twice.

One may also dance each part twice. Part 1 is authentic, originating in east Prussia. The others are versions which have been danced in half of Europe.

Provenance: According to Gammaldans i Norden, related dances are also known in Denmark as rheinlænder polka or Wienerkreuz, in Finland as Kreuz-polka, 'Kymmenen kynttä', 'Ruotsinpolkka' and 'kuppari', on the Faroe Islands as 'Wienarkreutz', in Iceland as 'Vienarkrus', in Norway as Wienerkryss, 'Vininkreds' and 'Viniknes', and in Sweden as Wienerkreuzerpolka, 'Fröken Chick' and 'Krysspolka'.
