Provenance: Variants of this dance, consisting of polka interspersed with stamps/stomps to one side and another, have occured in various
parts of, especially Swedish-speaking, Finland, under a variety of names, including 'Stannpolka' and 'Stådans' in Sibbo, 'stoppen' in
Tenala, 'stopp' in Kimito, 'stoppolka' in Pargas, 'fingerpolka' in Esbo, 'stopparin' in Maxmo, and 'första maj' in Pedersö.
It is also known as 'piratyspolkka' (pidätyspolkka) elsewhere in Finland.
The dance, and similar music, is also known to have occured as
Stop in Denmark,
Stopp on Åland and elsewhere in Finland,
Stoggen & polkastoppen in Norway,
Stoppen & 'Skåningen' in Sweden.
According to Gammaldans i Norden, related dances are also known in Denmark as 'slibstensstykke', in Finland as
'piratyspolkka' [pidätyspolkka] and 'stopp-polka', and in Norway as 'stoggen' and 'Skåningen'.
